Atlanta Motor Speedway will serve as the national host for thunderous drag cars and meticulously-detailed show cars at the ACDelco Street Drag Nationals on Sept. 19 and 20.
The inaugural event will unite hot rods, tuners and drag cars for the biggest two-day straight-line racing event in Atlanta Motor Speedway history. The weekend culminates with the final run of an eight-car championship bracket, crowning the fastest car in each of 10 divisions.
In addition to heart-pounding drag racing, the ACDelco Street Drag Nationals will feature a Show-N-Shine competition with both single-day and weekend awards, a speedway cruise around Atlanta Motor Speedway's high-banked 1.54-mile quad-oval, a burnout contest and a spectacular Friday night fireworks show. Additionally, more features will be added to the event.
The two-day date for the ACDelco Street Drag Nationals will take the place of the NOPI Nationals Motorsports Supershow, which was terminated late last month.
After the cancellation of the NOPI Nationals event, Atlanta Motor Speedway officials felt compelled to provide an entertainment outlet for NOPI fans, while incorporating the spectacle of drag racing.
"With the cancellation of the NOPI Nationals, an opportunity arose for us to entertain our fans with a new event," said Brandon Hutchison, Atlanta Motor Speedway vice president of events. "We wanted to create a national event that would appeal to both racing and car show fans. The ACDelco Street Drag Nationals will incorporate many of the elements of NOPI, but will be built around street drag racing. Unlike NOPI, the event will showcase much more than modern, "Tuner" type cars."
Each division points winner from Atlanta Motor Speedway's Friday Night Drags presented by ACDelco will receive a berth into the championship bracket, seeded based on their total FND points. Entrants not locked into the top-six in points will have the opportunity to vie for one of two remaining bracket spots, with the seventh seed going to Friday's champion and eighth to Saturday's.
"An exciting aspect of this competition is racers don't have to qualify to race in the championship bracket; you can show up on Friday or Saturday and win your way into the eight-car bracket, we will have a full slate of drag racing each day and everyone is invited out to compete," added Hutchison.
Tickets for the event are $10 for a single-day entry or $15 for a two-day pass and can be purchased by calling (877) 9-AMS-TIX (877-926-7849) or by visiting www.atlantamotorspeedway.com. In addition, Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering camping with full hook-ups for $35, while basic camping is $25.
Registration for the Show-N-Shine, drag racing or burnout contest is $20 each day. Competitors wanting to compete in two events on one day can purchase a combination ticket for $30 per day.
